It’s a big week on the global racing calendar, with elite contests unfolding across several countries.

Yasuda Kinen

This year’s Yasuda Kinen has plenty of storylines heading into the Group 1 Mile but not many loom larger than Gaia Force. Runner-up in this race a year ago, the son of Kitasan Black will be looking to break through at the highest level for the first time. Trovatore is the likely favourite and following his past two wins there’s every reason to believe he can be in the finish again. Stellenbosch is the only mare in the race but she also has claims in a competitive event.

English Derby Showdown

It’s one of the world’s most famous races and this weekend Aidan O’Brien will be attempting to win his 12th Epsom Derby. Galileo kicked things off in 2001 but the wins have come thick and fast recently with the Irish conditioner having won five of the last seven editions of the stallion making race. Benvenuto Cellini is seen as the most likely victor tomorrow however he also saddles up Pierre Bonnard. The chances don’t end there either with Item for Andrew Balding and Maltese Cross for William Haggas both in single figures.

Queensland Oaks

Group 1 racing continues in Brisbane with the winter carnival still in full swing and this weekend it’s the fillies who come to the fore. The Queensland Oaks is often a springboard for future success and that’s what this year’s contenders will be hoping for again. Panova will be looking to continue Chris Waller’s stranglehold on the Group 1 scene in Australia with Ben Melham taking the steer. In an ironic twist, Melham’s wife, Jamie will ride the biggest danger in the race in Chispa, who is also trained by Waller.
