What is the European Cricket League?
The European Cricket League (ECL) is a T-10 cricket league featuring top cricket teams from Europe’s domestic cricket leagues. The tournament is played using 10-overs cricket, where each team plays a single inning of no more than 10 overs. Games typically last around 90 minutes, making them easier to watch for the average fan.
The tournament is set up to be the cricket equivalent of the UEFA Champions League. Teams playing in the ECL are champions of the domestic leagues of their respective countries, which include England, France, Spain and the Netherlands. Each club is placed into a group, with the top teams advancing to the Super 3 knockout rounds while the bottom teams play in eliminators and qualifier rounds.
History of the European Cricket Series?
The ECL is a relatively new competition, with the inaugural tournament held in 2019. It was founded with eight member federations of the International Cricket Council and German cricketer Daniel Weston.
The original member nations taking part in the competition were France, Italy, Netherlands, Russia, Denmark, Romania, Spain and Germany. However, the tournament has since been expanded to include 16 participants, with champions from English, Belgian, Finnish, Irish, Norwegian, Scottish and Swedish cricket leagues also invited.
Although the 2020 and 2021 editions of the tournament were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it returned in 2022 and has been held annually ever since. So far, every edition of the tournament has been hosted in Spain, where cricket fans from across Europe come to support their favourite teams.
